How we model over 2.5 goals
Goals markets come down to attack against defence. The model weighs each side’s expected goals scored and conceded, how many goals their recent matches have actually produced, the pace of the league they play in, and their home and away scoring patterns. A fixture between two high-scoring, leaky sides in a goal-heavy league clears the bar. A tight defensive matchup does not.
Where over 2.5 goals goes wrong
The usual trap is a big favourite that wins comfortably 1-0 or 2-0, which loses the over even though the result looked obvious. Early red cards, a team defending a lead and heavy pitches all suppress goals. Goals also arrive in clusters, so a run of four low-scoring matches is normal rather than a sign the model has broken.
